Evolutionary Relationships

Relatedness is the whole point of the manifest world. The universe was created so that relationship could occur.” – Andrew Cohen

What occurs on the very edges of relatedness has captured my full attention for more than 40 years. As a teacher and as a woman, I have given my life to the creation of a world that expresses the highest forms of truth, beauty, goodness, love and creativity. I’m excited about sharing in and being a part of this forum each month. Here are the first distinctions of Evolutionary Relationships – my favorite passion.

Clearly there are different levels of relating – all of which serve different needs we have as human beings – our need to survive (which we do more successfully together), our need for self-esteem (to feel loved and valued) and our need to belong (to be connected and accepted as a part of other people’s lives). As we develop and maintain those elemental needs, our longing reaches towards other possibilities. A deep desire to share higher levels of love, beauty, consciousness and creativity arise, along with the need to expand our cognitive capacities and relational skills. For example, as we expand our consciousness, the possibility of awakening multi-dimensional capacities such as empathic telepathy suddenly comes onto our radar, and becomes important.

Evolutionary relationships are consciously created relationships formed around an explicit commitment to developing these higher possibilities. Besides transcending and including all the levels that come before (no small task) – the core of this particular kind of relationship invites the evolutionary impulse into the center, from where it shapes, drives and expands the relationship according to its desires. This extraordinary force is also known as EROS, and is the energy/intelligence/mystery that created the universe, and informs its continual unfolding. Simply, it’s pure love and creativity.

The awareness and continual development of a more awakened, evolutionary mutuality is central to developing the highest potentials of the inter-subjective field. All relationships have an inter-subjective field (the subjective space between). It can be stagnant, destructive, dynamic, transformative, juicy and thriving. It’s there, whether we pay attention to it, or not. So, it makes sense to engage it consciously, and with increasing levels of mutuality in order to expand and fulfill our every potential.

Mutual influence is our ability and willingness to affect each other, while staying open to greater and greater subtleties in the dance of how we do affect each other. It’s one of the most important aspects in allowing the field of the relationship to thrive beyond our wildest imaginations.

Consider the following in your most current, cherished relationship:

  • What is it committed to?
  • What needs does it fulfill?
  • What is the consciousness of the relationship?
  • Are you aware of the inter-subjective field that it exists in?
  • Are you taking care of that field by engaging more deeply, and/or bringing more truth and vulnerability into your relating?
  • Are you aware of how you are influencing each other? How have you touched them lately, in a way that will stay with them forever?
  • How have they changed your life?

Consider sharing these inquiries with your cherished and see what opens up.

Until next time…

It would be nice to see some specific answers to these open ended questions some day.  I guess I will have to wait for the first wave of “Integral Biographies” to see how all of this talk ends up in action.
